My son James loves basketball. Guess I should have known he’d agreed to go
with me to Thursday’s Amari Thompson Soiree in support of Epilepsy Toronto. Amari’s
big brother—NBA superstar, Tristan Thompson of the Cleveland Cavaliers—is honourary
chairman of the evening. You bet, James wants to attend!
I’ve always thought Epilepsy
Toronto and the epilepsy community in general, needed a strong, well-known
personality to help raise awareness and funds for those with epilepsy and their
families. Along came Tristan, thank goodness! The Canadian citizen, who grew up
in Brampton, partnered with Epilepsy Toronto to host the soiree in honour of
his 11-year-old brother, Amari. Like James, Amari has suffered seizures since
birth.
Tristan, who calls Amari, “the
greatest motivational force in my life,” acknowledges that not every family
dealing with epilepsy has had his good fortune. For this reason he decided to
do what he could to help Amari and the 40,000 people in Toronto who struggle
with this life-altering neurological condition. I hope this year’s soiree—which
is being held at the Globe and Mail Centre on King Street East—raises lots of
money for Epilepsy Toronto. Thank you Tristan for all you’re doing to raise
awareness and funds for epilepsy. It’s going to be a great night; we can’t wait
to see you! (We wonder if Khloe Kardashian, Tristan’s
partner and mother of his three-month-old daughter, will accompany him?)

DeleteI am so enjoying reading your posts, Nancy. The Special Olympics has played a big role in the life of our family this summer as we all watched my niece Emily win four medals in swimming at the Canada games in Antigonish. You could see from the photos that she was bursting with pride and joy as she stood there on the podium. And, of course, behind every athlete there is a whole team of family and friends supporting and encouraging her. Her mum Barb is the coach of her swim team in Barrie. Such an important organization.
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine! Special Olympics is a wonderful organization. How fabulous for Emily to win four medals. Kudos to Barb for coaching the team. Congratulations to Emily and to Barb!
